Academic Background: Graduated from BA Fashion Design Womenswear course, Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design

 Fashion designer. Mr. Yamagata graduated at the top of his class in the BA Fashion Design Womenswear course, Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, in 2005. While in university, he worked as a design assistant to John Galliano. He established his own brand “writtenafterwards” in April 2007. Mr. Yamagata participated in the 2009 Spring/Summer Tokyo Collection and presented the opening fashion show at the Arnhem Mode Biennale (Netherlands) in 2009. He won the Rookie of the Year Award at the Fashion Editors Club of Japan Awards in 2012. Mr. Yamagata then became the first Japanese individual to be nominated for the LVMH Prize for Young Fashion Designers. Alongside his activities as a designer, he runs Coconogacco, a school focused on experimentation and the study of fashion expressions. He was a lecturer of the first class, which was held in Japan in cooperation with the School of Fashion Design, Central Saint Martins College, in 2016. He has also been a lecturer at Tokyo University of the Arts since 2018. In 2019, he was selected among the BoF 500 by the editors of The Business of Fashion.

  • Special Prize at the 2013 Mainichi Fashion Grand Prix
  • Prizes in three categories at the International Talent Support 2014
  • Special Jury Prize, INGEO Award, Best Portfolio Award, and JANE Award at the international competition ITS#THREE in Trieste, Italy (winning a prize of 10,000 euros)
  • Served the finale of ITS#THREE show
  • Selected for the Nina De Yorke Fashion Illustration Competition (one of its juries was Julie Verhoeven)
  • Served the finale at the Graduation Fashion Show and Press Fashion Show at Central Saint Martins College
  • Selected as a finalist for the L’Oréal Competition and participated in fashion shows in China and other countries representing Central Saint Martins College
  • Presented works in the Decoration never dies, anyway exhibition at Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum in 2017.
  • Presented works in the Images of Asia exhibition at Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum in 2019.
