Shida Maki started learning the art of Ryukyu dance from her mother Shida Fusako (a Ryukyu dance performer and a nationally-designated important intangible cultural property of Ryukyu dance [comprehensive designation]) at the age of three. She completed the study at the Graduate School at the Okinawa Prefectural University of Arts. She holds her solo Ryukyu dance performance titled “Maki no Kai” and has appeared in many other performances organized by the National Theatre of Japan, among others.
Furthermore, she has participated in various overseas performances hosted by institutions such as the Agency for Cultural Affairs and the Japanese Foundation. Apart from her success in Ryukyu dance, she is actively involved in the fusion thereof with other genres in various ways, including classical dance-themed collaborations. Currently, she is the Second-Generation Headmaster of the head family of the Choyo School of Ryukyu Dance, Member of the Okinawa Times Traditional Art Selection Committee, and Successor in the Ryukyu Dance Preservation Society.
