Dr. Ota Sotatsu is the Representative Director of Yuuhisai Koudoukan—a public interest incorporated foundation, Head of Oimatsu, a Japanese traditional confectionery shop,Tea master and Doctor of Engineering. He is also a part-time lecturer at Kyoto Prefectural University and the Ritsumeikan University College of International Relations.
He oversees the lectures on tea culture and others at the Yuuhisai Koudoukan, which used to be a place of scholarship in the Edo Period. He specializes in food culture and theory of traditional industry and has become a topic of conversation inside and outside Japan for the Tea Ceremony parties he has organized.
Moreover, he has appeared in several TV programs, including NHK’s, “Kyou no Ryouri (Today’s Dish),” “Yokoso Senpai (Welcome, Senior),” and “Bi no Tsubo (Pot of Beauty).”

[Books] His books include: “Basics of Tea Ceremony with DVD: How to enjoy ‘beautiful manners’ and ‘tea ceremony’” (Mates Publishing Co., Ltd.), “Kagai (Geisha Quarter) in Kyoto – People, Culture, Streetscape” (Nippon Hyoron Sha Co., Ltd.), and “The Tale of Genji and Sweets,” (Goshoin Publishing). He is also the author and editor of the “Encyclopedia of the Forms of Japanese Culture” (Maruzen Publishing Co., Ltd.), “Total Cooking Terms Dictionary,” and co-author of “Chakapon in Heisei – Seasonal Tea Ceremony Events at Yuuhisai Koudoukan,” (Tankosha Publishing).
